Cat Lick Mats: What They Are, What to Put on Them and How to Freeze and Clean Them
What a lick mat does for a cat, the safe fills to spread on it, and how to freeze and clean it.
A cat lick mat looks almost too simple to work. It is a flat pad covered in ridges and grooves. Spread a spoonful of wet food across it, though, and a meal your cat would have finished in seconds from a bowl becomes a slow, absorbed licking session.
Licking is how cats prefer to eat soft food, which is why lick mats suit them so well. Here is what a cat lick mat is, what it does for an indoor cat, what you can safely spread on it, and how to freeze and clean one.
A cat lick mat is a textured pad you spread soft food on, so your cat licks it out of the grooves instead of eating from a bowl. It slows eating and adds easy enrichment to an indoor cat's day. Use cat-safe fills only, like their own wet food, a paste stick or unsalted homemade broth, and freeze it thin for a longer session. Keep onion, garlic, dairy and salty broth off it, and wash it after every use.
What is a cat lick mat?
A lick mat is a flat pad with a textured surface: ridges, grooves and little pockets that hold soft food. Your cat cannot gulp from it. They have to lick each groove clean, so the same portion takes far longer to finish.
The best ones for cats are sized for cats. The FreezPaw Relax Lick Pad is a paw-shaped pad designed for spreading soft fills, made for cats of all ages and described on its product page as ideal for kittens. Like the rest of the FreezPaw line, it is built around feline portions and the lapping motion cats use.
What are the benefits of a lick mat for cats?
It is not a cure-all, but it does a few things well.
- It slows eating. Food spread into grooves cannot be gulped, so a fast eater has to take their time.
- It gives your cat a job. An indoor cat's food usually arrives in a bowl with no effort at all. Working food out of a mat adds a small, hunting-style task to the day.
- It is an easy first win. Cats give up on hard puzzles quickly. A mat has no lid, no openings and nothing to figure out, so it is the gentlest way into food enrichment.
- It is a quiet wind-down. After a chase with a wand toy, a few minutes of licking helps your cat shift out of play mode.
- It can add water. A thin layer of unsalted broth or water with a few flakes of food, frozen on the mat, is a low-calorie way to get a little more liquid into your cat.
No lid, no openings, nothing to figure out. That is why a lick mat is the gentlest way into food enrichment.
If your cat sleeps all day, pesters for food or sprints around at 4 am, our guide to indoor cat boredom explains what may be going on and where a lick mat fits.
What can I put on my cat's lick mat?
Build from food a cat is designed to eat, and keep portions small.
Cat-safe fills
- Their own wet food or pâté. The best option, and calorie-neutral if you take it from their meal
- A Lickable Cat Paste Stick in tuna, salmon or chicken
- Unsalted homemade broth, mixed into wet food so it stays put, or frozen
- Plain cooked chicken or fish, boneless, unseasoned and mashed fine
- Plain pumpkin purée, a small amount, pumpkin only
Keep off the mat
- Onion and garlic in any form, including most store-bought broth, gravy and savory baby food
- Dairy, which most adult cats do not digest well
- Salty broth and stock cubes
- Grapes, raisins, chocolate and xylitol
- Bones and regular raw fish
- Dog food, which is not made for cats
The full list, with the reasons, is in our guide to cat-safe frozen fills. It is different from the dog list, so do not borrow your dog's recipes.
How much? Less than you think. Whatever goes on the mat counts as food. For FreezPaw fillers, the guideline is up to 50 grams a day for an average-sized adult cat, with regular meals adjusted to keep calories balanced. Kittens and smaller cats need less.
How do you introduce a lick mat to your cat?
The first session decides whether your cat bothers with it again, so make it easy.
1. Spread it thin
- A teaspoon or so of wet food or paste
- Pressed lightly into the grooves
2. Serve it unfrozen
- Quick success on day one
- Put it where your cat already eats
3. Try a short freeze
- Once your cat licks it clean happily
- A short freeze, not overnight
4. Build up
- Fuller layers and longer freezes
- Only once your cat engages reliably
In a multi-cat home, give each cat their own mat in a separate spot. A confident cat will happily finish everyone's.
Should you freeze a cat lick mat?
Yes, once your cat is used to it. Freezing is what turns a lick mat from a two-minute snack into a proper activity.
Freezbone tip
Spread, don't pile. A thin layer pushed into the grooves freezes faster and is easier for a cat to lap than a thick mound on top. Lay the mat flat in the freezer so the fill sets evenly.
If your cat loves runnier fills like broth, a mat with deep grooves works, but a toy built for liquids is easier. The FreezDrip Flow Slow Feeder has grooves where liquid fills freeze in place, so nothing runs off before it sets.
“A good friend recommended that I get a Freezebone for my kitty and I’m beyond glad I did! Sophia LOVES her frozen treats and it will work out for a nice cool treat this summer!! Thank you Freezebone!!!”

How do you clean a cat lick mat?
- Rinse it soon after use. Wet food that dries in the grooves is much harder to shift.
- Wash it after every session. The FreezPaw Relax Lick Pad is dishwasher-safe, according to its product page. For other mats, follow the care notes.
- Check the grooves. Make sure no old food is left in the corners before you refill it.
- Let it dry fully before the next fill.
- Inspect it now and then. If your cat has bitten pieces off, replace it.

When is a lick mat not right for my cat?
- Your cat is on a prescription diet, has kidney disease or is diabetic: ask your vet before adding any fill
- Your cat chews or swallows pieces of the mat: take it away and switch to a sturdier toy
- Your cat has a sudden change in appetite: see your vet before you change how you feed
For most cats, though, a lick mat is the simplest piece of enrichment you can add. A spoonful of their own food, spread thin, and the bowl suddenly has competition.
